General Questions About Hypnosis

What is hypnosis and how can it help me?

Hypnosis is a completely natural state of mind that we experience many times in our lives. For example, when we drive a well-known route “on autopilot”, when we get sucked into an exciting book, watch our favourite TV show with tunnel vision, and robotically do our dreary 9-5 jobs.

Hypnosis or trance is a deeply relaxed state that creates focused-attention on your inner world – your feelings and emotions – which are ruled by your subconscious mind.

By focusing our attention on the inside, we can quickly, easily and effectively access negative feelings, find out what they’re trying to tell us and resolve things that are holding us back from achieving what we want to in our lives, careers and businesses.

Hypnosis can help you in a very wide range of areas in your life – from building confidence, reducing stress, becoming more productive, letting go of unwanted habits, creating the life of your dreams and becoming calm and relaxed, taking life and business in your stride.

Hypnosis can also help with a plethora of health issues. That’s not my area of expertise and I can happily refer you to a competent and experienced colleague.

Is hypnosis safe?

Hypnosis is a natural experience of the mind and as such, is not harmful.

Many millions of people worldwide practise hypnosis to their huge benefit, and research shows that its beneficial effects have much in common with those of meditation and other similar practices.

Hypnosis is not recommended as a substitute for medical or other treatments or diagnosis. Hypnosis has many potential benefits working in harmony with any medical or other treatment that you may undertake.

People with very traumatic personal histories or severe emotional vulnerabilities may find it best to seek expert medical support before undergoing hypnosis coaching.

Caution and expert guidance are also strongly recommended in the case of epilepsy or psychosis and in substance-induced altered states of consciousness. In these cases, it’s recommended that a medical or other appropriate practitioner is consulted for guidance.

Hypnosis should NEVER be practised when driving or doing any other activity that requires your conscious attention or control.

Is it possible not to come out of trance?

The short answer:

No, it isn’t.

The long answer:

Have you ever woken up in the morning without an alarm? I’m sure you have. You wake up when you’re ready and you’ve had enough sleep.

In hypnosis coaching, it’s similar although I am your gentle “alarm” by counting you out of trance from one to five.

99% of my clients become fully aware at number five. A very small percentage need counting out again because they are in a very deeply relaxed state similar to sleep.

If I left you to your own devices (which I would never do), you would become fully aware of your own accord. Similar to waking without an alarm.

What if I'm not hypnotisable?

It is extremely rare that someone would be classed as not hypnotisable.

If someone is resistant to hypnosis, it is because they do not want to be hypnotised, not because they are not hypnotisable.

Similarly, if someone does not have the intention to change, then they could easily resist being hypnotised, but that does not class them as not hypnotisable. It classes them as resistant to change.

What can hypnosis help me with?

Hypnosis can help with a multitude of issues and challenges.

Here are a few examples of things I’ve helped my clients with, in no particular order:

  • Owning your expertise and value
  • Playing bigger
  • Ditching imposter syndrome
  • Dropping worry, finding calm and ease instead
  • Rocket-boosting self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Becoming immune to criticism
  • Turning self-criticism to self-praise
  • Feeling good enough and moving towards self-love
  • Reversing self-doubt and become your own cheerleader
  • Dissolving angst about visibility, enjoy being “out there” instead
  • Achieving success and abundance
  • Feeling confident about public speaking
  • Unleashing your creativity
  • Improving productivity, concentration and focus
I'm worried about losing control.

This is a common worry and I can assure you that there is absolutely nothing to worry about because the good news is that you actually GAIN much more control through hypnosis than you had before! In fact, you’re more in control in trance than in a conscious, awake state.

You gain much better control of your thoughts, feelings and emotions through hypnosis because you get to know yourself so much more deeply.

You let go of unwanted beliefs and habits and become more of who you truly are. You learn to drop the baggage of other people’s limiting opinions and beliefs that you grew up with or took on from well-meaning but misguided authority figures.

In trance, you guide me to where you want to go with your feelings and memories, not the other way around.  I have a facilitator role in your transformation and you guide me where it’s necessary to go in your subconscious mind to be able to work through the negative feelings that are holding you back.

If you don’t want to reveal something, you don’t have to, although I would hope that we had built up enough trust between us that you would want me to help you clear what is blocking you from what you want to achieve.

Here’s a blog post I wrote about busting the four main fears about hypnosis:

Busting the four main fears about hypnosis

What if I don't remember what happened?

It doesn’t really matter. Your subconscious mind remembers all that it wants and needs to remember. Not consciously remembering doesn’t impair or diminish the effect of hypnosis coaching.

It is also not necessary to analyse what happened in the session either. Your subconscious mind is doing its perfect work in the background while you get on with your day.

However, if you’d like to know exactly what I say to you during the hypnotic programming part of the session, you can listen to it again while you have your eyes open and concentrating if you wish, once I’ve sent you the recording at the end of the session.

Listening to the 15-20 min recording in a deeply relaxed state is your “homework” between sessions.

What if I fall asleep?

No worries. It’s not really sleep, it more like a sleep of the nervous system. Your subconscious mind is still listening, taking in whatever it needs to hear.

And have you ever woken up in the morning without an alarm? I’m sure you have. You wake up when you’re ready and you’ve had enough sleep.

In hypnosis coaching, it’s similar although I am your gentle “alarm” by counting you out of trance from one to five.

99% of my clients become fully aware at number five. A very small percentage need counting out again because they are in a very deeply relaxed state similar to sleep.

If I left you to your own devices (which I would never do), you would become fully aware of your own accord. Similar to waking without an alarm.

I don't want to walk around like a chicken.

I completely understand. We’ll save that for show hypnotists, shall we?

Unless you request to be able to cluck like a chicken, I’d much rather help you achieve your goals in life and business.

Seriously, the reason people do things like that on stage with a hypnotist is because they have given their permission before the show to do anything that the hypnotist says. The volunteers WANT to let their hair down, do crazy things and “blame” it on the hypnosis (“I didn’t know what I was doing, haha!”)

But that is not what therapeutic hypnosis is all about. Check out my testimonials and case studies my clients’ success stories:

Who can benefit from hypnosis?

Anyone who wants to change, has the intention to change, who is 100% committed to the process.

  • It’s for you if you’ve had enough of self-doubt and lack of confidence.
  • You want more out of life.  You want to feel valued, loved, happy and fulfilled.
  • You want to progress in your career or expand your business.
  • You want the freedom to choose how you spend your time and who you spend it with.
  • You want financial security and freedom.
  • You want to be able to do this with confidence and ease.
  • You’ve had enough of feeling average or not good enough.
  • You may appear successful on the outside but don’t feel it on the inside.
  • You’re struggling to find a way to move forwards.
  • You get trapped in negative thinking.
  • You feel exhausted doing all the things.
  • You tend to be an over-giver and have difficulty setting healthy boundaries.

The right person for my hypnosis coaching is highly likely to feel much more confident and calm straight after the first session.

90% of my clients release what has been holding them back within the first two to three sessions.

They notice immediate improvements and negative feelings become a dim and distant memory.

They accelerate their business growth or career in ways they didn’t think possible.

They begin to live a more expansive, fuller life.  They begin to recognise opportunities and learn to trust their own instincts.  They start living their life in a way that feels good to them.

Because this therapy is quick and so transformative you’ll find that you don’t need to do all the other personal development work anymore, saving you time, money and peace of mind.

I don't understand how hypnosis works. Will it still work?

I do some fun exercises with all new clients in the first session to help you understand how hypnosis and the power of suggestion works.

So not understanding before we start working together is not a problem.

The most important things are that you trust me to be able to help you and that you want to change, you have the intention to change, and you trust the process.

Then the magic will happen effortlessly!

When is it advisable not to seek out a hypnotherapist?

Hypnosis is a natural experience of the mind and is not hazardous in itself. Many millions of people worldwide practise hypnosis to their great benefit and research shows that its beneficial effects have much in common with those of meditation and similar practices.

However, hypnosis is not a substitute for medical or other treatments or diagnosis. Hypnosis has many potential benefits working in harmony with any treatments that are undertaken.

People with very traumatic personal histories or severe emotional vulnerabilities may find it best to seek expert medical support in addition to learning to practice hypnosis.

Caution and expert guidance are also strongly recommended in the case of epilepsy or psychosis and in substance-induced altered states of consciousness. In these cases, it is recommended to consult a medical or another appropriate practitioner for guidance.

Where does hypnosis originate from anyway?

Hypnosis has been around for a loooong time. Here’s an article I wrote about its history: https://suzannedinter.com/roots-hypnotherapy/

Working with Suzanne

How does hypnosis coaching differ from normal coaching?

Hypnosis coaching differs greatly from other forms of coaching and therapy.

In normal coaching, psychotherapy, counselling and talk therapies, you talk and think for months or years.

When you talk and think, you’re using your conscious, thinking mind only. You scratch the surface of the things that are holding you back. You might move forward an inch but could easily get dragged back to where you were because the deep, core issue that is preventing you from thriving is still there.

In hypnosis coaching, on the other hand, you use your subconscious mind, aka your imagination aka the boss of your brain, to access your feelings and emotions.

This is the power of hypnosis coaching because the feelings and emotions attached to past experiences and beliefs handed to you as a child or young adult are the things that are holding you back from achieving what you want to achieve right now.

When you access these feelings and focus your attention on them for a little while, guided and facilitated by me, you learn to understand why they are holding you back, release the misunderstandings and limiting beliefs, find forgiveness, acceptance and closure and move forwards in leaps and bounds.

This happens very quickly, easily and effectively with hypnosis.

I used to offer up to six sessions to my clients. But I reduced my programme to only FOUR sessions because 95% of my clients achieved their outcome (and more) in three or four sessions.

Compare that to months or YEARS of coaching or therapy, I know which type of help I’d want to go for.

What type of clients do you work with?

My clients are often ambitious and determined business owners and people in corporate who want to get the most out of life.

However, they are stuck because they don’t feel good enough or confident to achieve their next goal.

They second-guess themselves. Doubt and negativity hold them back from moving forwards boldly and decisively.

They’re fed up trying to push through. Will power is not getting them where they want to go.

They’re ready to do something radically different to get radically different, fast and effective results.

How do I prepare for an online session?

Charge up your laptop, tell your family not to disturb you – you’ll be back in about 90 minutes, and get comfortable in an armchair or on the sofa.

You can also set up in your bedroom, sitting up on your bed with the laptop next to you).

Now all you have to do is relax. The next 90 minutes are dedicated to you.

How does hypnosis work online and what tech do I need?

Hypnosis works wonderfully online! There are no disadvantages that I’ve come across in the years I’ve been working online.

In fact, there are a number of plusses, like the fact that you don’t have to drive anywhere. You get to do this from the comfort of your own home. You can choose a hypnotherapist that suits you and your needs from anywhere in the world, and not have to settle with the local one around the corner.

All you need to do hypnosis online is an internet connection, a laptop or iPad (no phones because of the distractions) and a camera (which are often built-in).

First Hypnosis Session? Watch This!

Do I have to do anything between sessions?

Yes.

For example, listening daily to your personalised hypnotic audio which is usually between 15 and 20 minutes long.

This helps to reinforce the good work we did in the session.

I also assign other tasks that will help you achieve your goals more quickly. Action is key!

Do you follow a fixed procedure for every client?

I can’t and won’t because everyone is different.

I have a toolbox of techniques and methods that I tailor to each individual using my expertise and intuition during the sessions.

Why can't I book your Quantum Leap 1:1 programme without doing your Breakthrough Session first?

It’s important to me that we a) both get to know each other and b) I get you results straight away.

At the end of the call, if we both feel that we are a good fit and that we are excited about working together, we’ll create your personalised Quantum Leap programme to continue making progress towards your goals.

How can previous clients work with you again?
They can message me for a link to book a single session or a new Quantum Leap Programme.

They can also book a call to talk about what they need if they are unsure.

Do you have professional indemnity/public liability insurance?

Yes, I do.

Are you a member of any professional organisations?

Yes, two, actually.

I’m a member of the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners (A.C.H.E.) which is a prestigious organisation for highly-qualified hypnotherapists.

It was set up many years ago by the father of Transforming Therapy™ (my method of hypnotherapy), Gil Boyne.

There is a minimum requirement of 200 hours of training before you are allowed to join the A.C.H.E.

Membership has to be renewed every two years by proving that you have completed at least 20 hours of continued professional development (CPD) training during that time.

I am also a member of a German body called Deutsche Verband für Hypnose e.V. through which I have access to professional indemnity/public liability insurance and local legal advice if needed.

Tell me about your hypnotherapy training.

I originally did 200 hours of in-person practice and theory with Dr John Butler of Hypnotherapy Training International (HTI) in London over the course of two years.

I then undertook a year-long examination process to receive my diploma.

I have also since added Timeline Therapy™ to my toolkit by becoming a certified Hypnofit® practitioner.

I regularly attend continued professional development training (CPD) and am an active member of a supervision group for hypnotherapists.

What other qualifications do you have?

I am a certified Hypnofit(R) Timeline Therapy(R) hypnotherapist.

I have a BA (Hons.) from Middlesex University, UK, in History (major) with German (minor).

I have a Cambridge certificate in teaching English as a foreign language from International House in London.

I also have bronze, silver and gold in disco dancing from the late 1970s 💃😎😉

What work and life experience do you have?

I let school at 18 after doing A’levels and worked in banks for two years in London.

Then I moved away from home and lived in Liverpool with friends for a year and temped as a secretary in lots of different companies. This was my first life-changing experience.

During that time I plucked up the courage to apply to uni.

I moved (unfortunately) back down to London (this time North London) and studied history and German at Middlesex Uni.

I did a semester abroad at Heidelberg uni which changed my life again.

I fell in love with Germany and the language and moved here the day after graduation from uni.

I worked freelance as a business English trainer in companies for 17 years helping people improve their English for work and gain in courage and self-belief that they could do their work competently in a foreign language too.

I worked in a couple of offices for a few years when the kids were little for a “breather” but I wasn’t fulfilled.

During this time, I had a profound transformation with hypnosis. I decided I had to become a hypnotherapist to help people radically change their lives too.

And twenty years ago, shortly after moving to Germany, I had a heavy bout of depression during which I started my personal development journey.

I wouldn’t be where I am today without any of these steps along the way!

What kind of guarantees can you give me?

Guarantee of results cannot be made because everyone is individual.

Each individual client has a different emotional starting point and desired outcome. Each person may vary in their response to hypnosis and their perception of what has been achieved.

Moreover, results from individual testimonials and case studies on this site are for reference only and your own personal experience may differ to those shown.

Do you sometimes refer people to other practitioners?

Yes, I do.

I actually have a question you didn't think of.

Really?! No worries 🙂 Why don’t we have a chat about it? I always find that’s the quickest way to answer any questions or give further info.
